Year in Taiwan
Fulbright is the State Department's premier program for academic and cultural exchange. I am taking part in the cultural exchange arm; from this August through next June, working with twelve other fellows, I will teach English to primary school students in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
Taiwan is an island nation off the southeast coast of mainland China. It is slightly larger than Maryland and home to some 24 million people. It is not Thailand. Kaohsiung is perched on Taiwan's southwest edge. It is one of the country's major cities--second in population only to the capital, Taipei--and is southern Taiwan's economic and political hub. After previous abortive attempts at study abroad blogging, I've decided to tackle this so that I can document the progress that I make as a teacher and person throughout the year. I also hope that this will prove as useful to future Fulbrighters as blogs from past participants have been to me. |
